About Us

What is DBZ Vortex, exactly? DBZ Vortex is a Dragonball Z fan-site dedicated to spriting based off of the turn-based Gameboy Color game 'Dragonball Z Legendary Super Warriors' (more information on the About LSW page). We've been active since late 2006 when Jay was the sole webmaster and there was no forum community. Here we are today, still a fairly big community with the die hard fanbase of LSW, still making spriters as always.

Years ago, a group of incredibly popular sprite rippers (mainly Grim & Bonzai, but occasionally Jay Ibero and Majin Aussie) ripped the original Gameboy Color Dragonball Z: Legendary Super Warriors sprites and created sheets of the original sprites (they run Sprite Database, and it is still a humongous archive of ripped and custom sprites from all consoles throughout the ages). Sadly, the limited colour pallet that LSW had as a result of the old hardware meant that in terms of spriting they were unattractive to use when someone could easily use Super Budoten or Hyper Dimension sprites. However, LSW is doubtlessly an easier form of sprite to edit from because of their chibi nature. Some time later, along came the soon to be father of the LSW community, who recoloured the sheets created by the legendary rippers above to be more accurate to the anime - Son Goharotto. In addition to this, he created characters from the show who weren't present in the game - Chaozu, Tien, Yamcha and Bardock to name a few. Rogue spriters often posted his work on their sites whilst claiming it as theirs, until it reached a point where Goharotto shut down his site (Enpitsudo Dojo), cutting off the links to the sprites. Luckily, on the site of the original rippers, all of the rips were still available, and someone even provided a .zip file of Goharotto's work, so they weren't all lost.

DBZ Vortex's webmaster, Jay decided in 2006 to create an LSW specific archive to house the sprites and to hopefully expand upon what was there. The result is what DBZ Vortex is today - a thriving community of passionate LSW spriters; some of whom have been in the game for over 4 years and have continually made improvements to the look and feel of what was once a dated spriting style.
